Movie Taking Place in the Mountain State; You Can Help Make it Happen

“Just a few months from now, a movie will be shot right here in the Mountain State, showing who the folks that call this place home really are. The filmmaker said he’s going to fight back against what Hollywood’s negative portrayal is of the hard workers that built this place.

The movie is called Angel’s Perch. Folks from Scrappy Cat Productions will be in Cass, as well as other locations starting in June.

They’re hiring locals to help produce the film, as well as act in it. The cinema is about a boy who lives in Pittsburgh but has to make his way back to his roots in Cass, to put his grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer’s in an assisted living home. He wanted her to be able to keep her memories of the place she grew up and all the people she knows and loves.”

West Virginia may soon find its place on the big screen but first, the producers of the film need your help. Writer and producer J.T. Arbogast is making “Angel’s Perch,” and hopes to film it in Cass, West Virginia.

It’s about a man who returns to his hometown, when his grandmother gets Alzheimer’s and can no longer live alone. Arbogast is making the film with the Alzheimer’s Association, and needs your help to raise the funds.

A New Year, A Renewed Energy…

Happy New Year!  We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season surrounded by family, friends.  The last few weeks of our year was very busy wrapping up a number of grant applications and continuing to polish the script.  It’s great to have the time to go back through a tighten all the things about the script that we love…make the story that we are telling as strong as possible.  It also makes us even more excited to get to Cass and start shooting this thing!

Like many of you at this time of year, we are faced with making our New Years Resolutions.  Early last week, Woody Guthrie’s “New Year’s Rulins” from 1943 made their way across the social media networks to lots of great discussion and laughter.  Some of them are absolutely hilarious…”Wash Teeth if any”, “Take Bath” (both extremely practical and great goals to have, by the way).  But there are a few of them that, when you stop to think about what they mean, resonate as much today as they did back when Mr. Guthrie wrote them down.  They were too good not to share…here’s a few of my favorites:

“#20. Dream Good” –  I think it’s safe to say that Woody isn’t just talking about the dreams we have while we sleep.  A year ago at this time, we were at the very beginning of the journey of making this film.  We were talking about how to make it happen, when to make it happen, if we thought we actually could make it happen.  And then, we took the leap with the launch of our Kickstarter campaign.  And we found that there were so many others out there who wanted to see this film happen and were eager to support us and be a part of the journey.  As we start 2012, I’m reminded that this is a good dream…a really good dream.  And that I can’t wait to see this “good dream” become a reality.

“#17. Don’t Get Lonesome” – Though we have and continue to make friends and pick up new “Angels” along the path to making this film, I’d be lying if I said there weren’t days when it feels very lonely…like we’re never going to get this boulder up to the top of the mountain.  BUT, almost as if on cue, in those moments when it feels toughest, we receive an email from a new “Angel” who has stumbled upon our website or Facebook page and it reminds us why we’re doing this…which, brings me to…

“#18. Stay Glad” – The wording of this one in particular I find really interesting.  It’s not Be Glad, it’s STAY Glad…almost as if he’s saying to himself, “Hey, you’ve already got so much to be glad about…remember that!”  And, quite frankly, so do we.  In the past year, we have met so many new friends, made so much progress that, when we turn around and look at how far we’ve come, it’s truly amazing.  But, we can’t stay turned around for long.  We’ve got to keep moving on up that mountain…with a smile on our face.

So, with a new (and quite possibly final) draft in the books as of today, we look forward to all that lies ahead this year INCLUDING making a beautiful film that we can all be proud of and sharing every step of that journey with you.

Happy New Year, friends!  STAY GLAD!

An Update and Holiday Message…

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! We know it’s been a long time since we last updated you on the progress of Angel’s Perch but now, as we approach the end of 2011, we thought that we would send along a message to let you know about all that’s been happening behind the scenes.

As you may know, we have pushed back principal photography to May 2012 due to some scheduling issues and the need to continue fund raising to fully finance the budget. While initially it was a bit of a setback, developments over the last two months have shown us that everything happens for a reason.

As you know, indie filmmakers must usually seek out alternative ways to finance their projects–Kickstarter was the beginning of that process for us. It helped us get the train out of the station with some amazing momentum, which led to the support of local businesses and organizations with pro-bono and in-kind support, and now through some very exciting partnerships, we are poised to reach the top of the mountain. Through two of those new partnerships, with The Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter and the Filmmaker’s Collaborative in Boston, Angel’s Perch is now able to accept 100% tax-deductible donations. With just over 6 months to go before we start principal photography in June 2012, we are over halfway there to full funding for Angel’s Perch!

How can you help us get all the way there? Over the next few months, we will be busy applying for grants, pursuing corporate and personal donations, and continuing to make the connections that will help Angel’s Perch be the best film possible. You’ve already expressed an interest in seeing this film made by signing up for this list; will you renew your support today by helping us spread the word? Have a rich uncle who needs a tax deduction? Tell him about Angel’s Perch! Aunt Julie impossible to shop for? Donate to us on her behalf, and we’ll send her a personalized holiday card. Have an afternoon to kill? Tweet, Facebook, bake sale about us. Share our project with someone who has yet to come on board.

With so many depressing headlines in this world, it feels really good to be working on a passion project–something born of love, fueled by creativity, and nurtured by the extraordinary support of our community. We are finding that passion to be the best antidote for cynicism, and as we enter the holiday season and prepare for all of the challenges and joys of 2012, we look forward to continuing to share that passion with you.

Wishing you joy, peace, and strong, delicious eggnog–
The Angel’s Perch Team
